Sven-San is a Restaurant, Bar, Café and Private Dining space located on Oxford Street, Paddington. Inspired and borrowing from the cuisines of Japan and Scandinavia. Cuisines that are not too dissimilar from one another once you look beyond the obvious well known dishes such as tempura, sushi, meatballs and herring. Using the best of Australian locally sourced raw materials and ingredients where possible as well as some of the finest imported ingredients.

The Oxford Street Paddington strip once housed the hottest of the Modern Australian dining scene. Our venue at 495 Oxford Street was the original home of the famous three hatted restaurant Oasis Seros by Phillip Searle. Prior to Oasis Seros the venue also housed Perry’s by Neil Perry and Le Café Nouveau. Oxford Street also housed Claudes and later arrivals such as chefs Matt Moran, Paul Merrony and Luke Mangan. Twenty years ago, our founder Michael was lucky enough to dine at Oasis Seros and thought to himself that one day he would like to have this venue for a restaurant of his own. In 1994 Oasis Seros closed and the site was then taken over by a day spa and remained that way until late 2016 when Michael drove past the site and noticed a for lease sign and jumped on the opportunity to make his dream a reality. After 6 months of extensive renovations the dream has come alive and is now Sven-San.

  • Michael is a highly experienced chef and restaurateur with 35 year’s experience who also likes to think of himself as an all round nice guy and the rest of the team tends to agree! Michael was initially trained in Sweden and has travelled extensively throughout the world. He has called Australia home for 25 years now having started his own businesses in restaurants and pub bistros 20 years ago. He currently owns three existing restaurants called Eat Thai, TukTuk Street Bar and Vino e Cucina, all in Sydney’s iconic Paddington Five Ways. Michael is looking forward to getting back into the kitchen at Sven-San and delivering a food concept that has been a dream for 20 years and now finally feels that the Sydney demographic is ready for it.
